About Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden
The Alpine Botanical Garden is located near the top of Mt.Rokko at an elevation of 865m above sea level. The average annual temperature is approximately 9 (equivalent to the southern part of Hokkaido). The cold climate is optimal for the cultivation of nearly 1,500 varieties of alpine plants, cold climate plants and Mt.Rokko natural vegetation.
The Garden was established in 1933 under the supervision of Dr. Makino Tomitaro, a leading botanist of Japan. The Garden has the longest history among current Japanese alpine gardens. The Garden is also known as a place that the Japanese Imperial Family enjoys visiting. There is a shop selling dried flowers and a tearoom on the premises.
